I have been designing resources for many years as I worked with preschool and primary age youngsters with delayed or impaired speech and language skills. The resources using symbols are free. My latest resources which I have illustrated are extra tasks based on Marion Blank's Language Levels (previous ones have been free). They can be used with groups of mixed language ability and are reasonably priced.

Resource intended to draw attention to the fact that sentences are not always statements. Mind-map as a reminder. Set of conversations (with PCS or Widgit symbols as illustrations) for children to complete with sentence end markers. Further set of blank writing frames for new conversations on given topics. Also useful to check children are reading with suitable intonation to mark sentence form. Many kids do not link how they talk to reading.

Connectives/conjunctions illus. by Widgit symbols

Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. The cards with connecting words and phrases are adaptable. Some ideas are given for promoting fluency. The level can be kept simple by reducing the number of cards in use. The activity worksheets can be used for a written reply if children can cope but most of the work can be done orally 1-1 or with a small group. The connectives for sentences with two halves often present quite a problem for kids with delayed language skills and need a lot of practice. Could also be used for EAL.

Symbols (c) Widgit Software 2010. These pages show some of the words that underpin talking about quantity, position, comparing, placing, arranging and so on. They all need to be practised with many different objects to ensure generalisation. Remember to stress first in a row is always on the left. This is critical to the understanding of instructions in maths and other areas. (First in the queue, however, depends on which way the queue is going. It's hard talking maths words!) Index in sheet order and alphabetical order.

Three resources to help children with impaired language skills understand and benefit from this lovely book used in so many schools. Illustrated with PCS or Widgit symbols. The pages could be presented with a simplified telling. If the CD is available, it is always useful to hear the story read exactly the same lots of times and the pages could accompany this. The song prompt cards for one of the CD songs lists the 'wow words' - listen and find the card, or use the card to sing the song with the instrumental version. The mind-map is a prompt for children to retell the story in their own way.
